Let’s be honest, about 90% of the population loves dessert and what better way to enjoy your dinner party desserts than to include pies, cakes, cookies and pastries in your cooking repertoire. And if you are one of the few members of the populous who doesn’t like dessert, what about baked turkey with compound butter or corn-on-the-cob dripping with warm melted butter? Either way, you get the picture – from thanksgiving to Christmas and even into the New Year and beyond, we all enjoy eating recipes that include butter as one of the ingredients. With this abundance of butter at every meal it’s inevitable that you will have a butter-related accident that involves a spill on your carpet or upholstery. Getting butter out of your carpet or sofas can be a tricky and time consuming proposition, especially soft butter that melts into the fabric fibers leaving a greasy mess with a sour smell long after your dinner party is complete and your guests are gone.

Luckily, there is a solution and the experienced carpet cleaners at Steam Green Carpet Cleaning are available to help you get your carpets back to looking just like new.

If you spill butter on the carpet or couch, remember to act quickly. Time is of the essence and the longer you wait before attempting to dissolve the stain, the harder it will be to completely remove it. Before using any cleaning products on your carpet always remember to spot test a patch of carpet in an inconspicuous area. Should the product cause damage to your carpet it will be in an area that cannot readily be seen.

Step One: Scrape the Butter from your Carpet or Sofa – the first step is to remove as much of the butter as possible by gently scraping with a blunt tool such as a spoon, or ironically a butter knife being careful to avoid causing damage to the carpet fibers.
Step Two: Absorb Excess Butter from Carpet or Upholstery – lightly sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch over the stain to soak up the excess butter. Both are inexpensive and can be found at any supermarket or drug store. Allow to sit for 15-30 minutes and then vacuum. The powder will help absorb the grease left by the butter. Repeat if needed.
Step Three: Clean Carpet or Couch Stain – using a soapy mix of dishwashing liquid and water, carefully blot the area over the stain being careful not to saturate the carpeting. When you have completed this step, remember to rinse the area with water making sure to remove the soap reside. Carefully blot the entire area with a clean white rag to absorb the excess water.
Step Four: Sponge the Butter Stain from Carpet or Sofa – Should the stain continue to be visible, apply a tiny amount of dry-cleaning solvent with a clean sponge. Spot test before treating and even then use the product a little at a time to avoid damaging your carpet.
Step Five: Repeat Carpet or Upholstery Stain Removal Steps – If you act quickly, you can reduce the damage caused by butter stains. Keep in mind that some stains may be more difficult to remove than others. If the stain is still visible complete the four previous steps a second time.
