How to Remove Protein Based Stains from Upholstery

In between professional services, or if you want to try and eliminate the odors on your own, you need to keep in mind that most odors on the upholstery are likely protein-based, derived of sweat, vomit, and pet accidents. When this is the cause, you need an enzyme upholstery cleaner of good quality. Be sure to perform a patch test and follow the directions.
1) Vacuum. Prior to treating your upholstery with any liquid solutions, it needs to be vacuumed. Use the vacuum’s upholstery attachment and hose to thoroughly vacuum the entire including the cushions and under the cushions as well. Get into the crevices and divots.
2) Enzyme Sofa Cleaner. As mentioned, protein-based odors and stains need to be treated with an upholstery cleaner with enzymes. Be sure to follow the directions and do a patch test. Any obvious spots or concentrated odors derived of bodily excretions from your pet or the people should be treated with the enzyme cleaner first.
3) Remove Other Odors from Couch. Mix 2 cups distilled white vinegar and 2 cups lukewarm water, in a bucket or bowl and slowly add 4 table spoons of baking soda until it is full dissolved. Transfer the solution into a spray bottle for simple application or treat a clean, white cloth in the solution and ring out the excess moisture so it is damp. Leave the solution on the area or areas for 5-10 minutes. Following the wait, use a dry, clean cloth to absorb the solution and odors with blotting technique.
4) Finish Upholstery Cleaning. The area will likely be damp, sprinkle straight baking soda on the area and let it sit over night or for several hours. The baking soda will life any lingering odors and pull out the moisture. Once it is dry, vacuum the area well to remove all the baking soda particles.
