Having pets means dealing with carpet stains and odors. From vomit, mud, blood, urine and feces, we need to stay on top of it. Before you try any methods you always need to do a color-fastness test to make sure you won’t change the color of the carpet and always blot as much of the mess as you can before cleaning it. You probably have many items at home already that will work great.

Three Natural Ways to Remove Pet Stains & Odors from Carpet

1. Vinegar with baking soda stain and odor remover. Simple, inexpensive and great for blood and urine stains. White vinegar is a miracle worker and will even take care of old stains. Baking soda is also known as nature’s odor remover. These two together create a powerhouse in cleaning.
Method #1- 2 cups of distilled vinegar, 2 cups of lukewarm water and 4 tablespoons of baking soda with a spray bottle if you want to use one. Pour the solution on the stain or spray it thoroughly and blot.
Method #2- put the baking soda on the stain and let it breakdown and deodorize for five minutes. Vacuum and apply the water and vinegar solution and blot.
Method #3- after blotting the stain up first, sprinkle the baking soda over the stain and the pour the solution right onto the stain. This will create a little cleaning volcano to “eat away” the stain. Blot and rub gently with a clean soft cloth after about 5 minutes.
2. Hydrogen-peroxide & baking soda stain and odor remover. Urine has “crystals” in it and hydrogen peroxide is a great substance to break them down and will also pull stains out. Mix it with naturally deodorizing baking soda to create another great cleaning solution. You’ll need rags or paper towel, a cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1 teaspoon of dish soap and a bowl. Sprinkle the baking soda on the stain after you soak up any extra liquid. Spray the solution on the stain and then the baking soda and scrub it gently into the fibers with a scrub brush or rag. Leave it for 10-15 minutes and vacuum thoroughly. If the stain is tough, you may need to repeat these steps.
3. Citrus-enzyme carpet cleaner. If you read the labels of many popular stain removal products, you’ll see the use of the word “enzymes” that are made to digest and breakdown stains and odors on a molecular level. If you have time and patience, you can formulate your own. You will need 1 ½ cups of lemon, orange peels/scraps, 1 liter of water, 7 tablespoons of brown sugar and a bottle big enough to hold the liquid and peels/scraps. Combine everything in the bottle, tightly screw the cap on and shake it well. Loosen the cap halfway to release the gases and to make sure the bottle won’t explode due to the build-up. After about three months you’ll have a natural enzymatic cleaner all ready to use!
