Without fail, you can count on your pet shedding volumes of fur or hair, especially dogs and cats. The shedding at rapid paces results in globs of fur piling on the carpet, upholstery, and all other surfaces it lands on. Reaching for the vacuum to clean up the mess is standard practice but sometimes, the pet hair is excessive and the vacuum cannot meet the demand. In an effort to remove the pet hair, Steam Green Carpet Cleaning has compiled alternative methods to remove the piled up pet hair when vacuuming alone isn’t enough.

How to Remove Hair on Carpet with Fabric Softener

Supplies you need: Water, Vacuum, Spray bottle, and Liquid fabric softener
Fabric softener pet hair/fur carpet removal:
1) Combine 3 parts water together and 1 part fabric softener in a squirt bottle.
2) Lightly mist the solution on the carpet. A barely damp surface is all you need, do not over saturate carpets.
3) Let the solution dry for about 10-15 minutes. It should not take too long with minimal moisture.
4) Once it is fully dry, thoroughly vacuum the carpet. Vacuuming the pet hair should easily be removed because the fabric softener has loosened the pet hair/fur from the carpet fibers.

Baking Soda Carpet Pet Hair Remover

Supplies you need: Vacuum and Baking soda.
Baking soda pet fur/hair from carpet removal:
1) Sprinkle the carpet lightly with baking soda, ensuring the surface is well covered.
2) The baking soda should sit for at least 10 minutes.
3) Vacuum the carpets completely, removing the baking soda and pet fur with it. The baking soda will not only help loosen the pet hair from the carpet, but it will also neutralize any lingering odors.

Floor Squeegee or Sponge Mop Hair Remover for Low Pile Carpet

Supplies you need: Vacuum, Spray bottle with water, and Clean Kitchen Sponge Mop
Sponge mop pet hair/fur removal from carpet:
1) Vacuum as much as the hair as much as possible to begin.
2) Lightly dampen the sponge mop with the water bottle.
3) Run the mop across the carpet’s surface with moderate pressure. At this point, the pet hair will clump up. Simply handpick the clumps of hair and vacuum any remaining remnants.

Additional Pet Hair Removal Tips

1) If the pet hair is severe and none of the above mentioned methods are effective, consider hiring a professional carpet cleaning expert.
2) Your current vacuum may not be up to par with the pet hair, invest in an upgrade that features a vacuum specifically designed to extract the pet hair from carpets.
3) Wear rubber gloves and manually remove the pet fur/hair out of the carpet fibers with your hands in isolated areas.
4) You can try using the rubber edge of a squeegee by gliding it across the surface of the carpet to help pull up the pet’s hair/fur if you prefer not to use any products for assistance. Vacuum after the hair has been loosened.

Moving your furniture around is a great way to change the traffic patterns in your space and extend the life of your carpet as well. The only problem, when you move your furniture, there are unsightly indentations where the furniture used to sit. You may think that over time those indentations will go away on their own, but that isn’t always the case. Steam Green Carpet Cleaning is here share some tips to help you get rid of stubborn indentations in your carpet from the furniture that has been sitting there for too long.

Using a Portable Heavy Duty Steam Carpet Cleaner

One of the most effective ways to remove any indentations from your carpet comes from a household steam cleaning machine. Make sure you follow the manufacturer instructions on how to use it, but you should notice that the indentations simply disappear. Sometimes, you have to spritz water on the area before using the machine for the most stubborn impressions.

Removing Carpet Dents with Iron

Not everyone has a steam cleaning machine in their home, and you may not want to go and find one to rent. If you have an iron and a damp cloth, this should work just fine. Lay the damp cloth on the impression and slowly iron the area. Leave the cloth on there for a minute or two when you are done and the mark should be gone. If this doesn’t work the first time, try it again.

How to Get Dents Out of Carpet with Ice Cubes

Another great option for carpet indentations is a simple ice cube. Simply put as many ice cubes as needed to fill the indentation and leave it for a period of time. It is best if you can leave it overnight. After it sits, use a wire brush to brush out the carpet and it should disappear. This should only be done if your carpet is durable enough to handle it.

Get Rid of Dents with a Hair Dryer

Using a squirt bottle, you can spray the dents and then use a blow dryer to remove them. The heat from the blow dryer will work similarly to a steam iron or clothes iron and you should be able to use your hands to fluff the carpet after that.

Fluff Carpet with Your Hands

When carpet indentations aren’t too severe, you can use to hands to get rid of them. Use your hands to rough up the carpet and comb through it. This doesn’t work for all carpet types, or when the indentation is a severe one. In those cases, give the other options listed above and see if they work.

If you have decided to give up your carpet and upgrade to solid hardwood flooring, you will find that there are several options for your to choose from. Hardwood flooring is expensive and an investment you are making in your home. You want the flooring you pick to be perfect for the space. Steam Green Carpet Cleaning is here talk about some of the considerations you need to make when picking the perfect hardwood flooring for your home.

Hardwood Flooring Plank Board Widths

The width of the planks you choose for your flooring can drastically change the overall appearance of the floor. Choosing narrow planks means you have chosen boards less than three inches wide; while wide planks are more than three inches. The standard choice usually has the ability to maximize the square footage and make the area look larger than it really is. You can also choose something completely different and go with parquet flooring which consists of squares and rectangles for a completely different design element.

Choose the Right Hardwood Floor Color

You will find that you can choose from a variety of colors that range from light to dark. A lot of that depends on the species of the wood you choose for your home. You may decide to go with some of the most durable hardwoods like cherry, oak or maple for long lasting results. Some people love the diversity of the exotic hardwood such as Brazilian cherry and mahogany. These exotic choices aren’t as durable.

Hardwood Floor Texture

Many people love the look of shiny, sleek flooring that has a high gloss finish. Another popular choice is reclaimed hardwood flooring that showcases the past with all the texture you could ever want in flooring. Hand scraped hardwood is a popular choice as well and adds a good amount of texture to the space.

Hardwood Flooring Finish

Not only does the finish on your hardwood flooring protect your floors, but it can also add color and luster as well. Many of the hardwood choices come pre-finished and you select that finish in the store before installation. The factory applied finishes also come with an outstanding warranty as well as offer longer lasting and more durable finishes.

Hardness of Hardwood Floors

Like mentioned above, different types of wood offer different hardness. If you have a household with pets or kids, it will probably be wise to select a flooring that is durable. Choosing a soft wood like pine, will likely show all the scratches and dings that come with a busy house full of people. You may want to look into engineered wood flooring as well since this is among the most durable choices you have to choose from.

Christmas is over, but you may have some carpet stains that will keep reminding you about it. Parties and visitors can all do a number in your carpets. Some DIY stain removal methods will have you using bleach, rubbing alcohol or other chemicals that can be damaging to your carpet. Other methods will have you using soaps and dish detergents that will leave residue behind. When residue is left behind it will attract more soil and can make stains almost impossible to remove.

How to Remove Old Carpet Stains

The best thing you can do when it comes to stain removal is to keep it as simple as possible. The first thing you’ll want to do is to remove as much of the solid part of the spill you can. The liquid portion of the spill and any other spills should then be blotted with a clean white cloth or paper towels. Continue with this process and use clean, cold water to help dilute the stain. Continue to use clean cloths or paper towels to soak up as much as possible. The best way to minimize any lasting damage is to follow these steps.

Common Stains Left Behind After Christmas

1. Mud– Winter weather can have a negative effect on our carpets. Wet or muddy footprints can get tracked all over the place and allergy sufferers can have issues when outdoor allergens get tracked into the home as well.
2. Christmas Tree sap– That beautiful tree really makes it feel like Christmas but the sap it can bring into your home can leave a sticky mess. Tree sap is made up of water, sugar and nutrients that will attract dirt and grime.
3. Red wine– Wine contains tannins that are very hard to remove when they end up on your carpet. Wine that sits around does get better with time but not when it’s on your carpet!
4. Coffee– The holidays may have you drinking more coffee to keep you going and you may find more or it on your carpet than you like.
5. Cranberry sauce– Cranberries also contain tannin that makes them red. This will make cranberry stains hard to remove.
6. Soot– Soot that can get tracks onto your carpet can leave quite a mess.
7. Oil– No matter where it comes from oil can make a stain spread and become worse. Oils can also attract more dirt if they aren’t removed correctly.
8. Gravy– Gravy is a double trouble because it contains oil and coloring which are both bad for your carpet.
9. Candle wax– Candles can make your house smell nice but if they drip on your carpet it can be hard to remove.
10. Pet accidents– Your furry family members may not want to go out when the weather gets cold. This means they may have an occasional accident in the house.
11. Frosting– Holiday baking doesn’t come without frosting mishaps and frosting is made worse if it’s dyed.
12. Makeup– More holiday parties can mean more makeup on your carpet.

The cleanliness of our carpets can say a lot about how well we maintain our home. If you’ve found yourself between professional carpet cleanings and are thinking about ways to have it looking its best, there are some helpful tips you can follow to achieve this goal.

Maintain a Vacuuming Schedule

Weekly vacuuming is important but high traffic areas need to be vacuumed at least twice a week. To ensure efficient dirt and dust removal start with a clean bag or filter and replace or wash ones that can be washed every three months. Replace vacuum bags when they get three-quarters full. Almost every vacuum clear will have a height adjustment on it. If it’s set too high it won’t be effective in picking up dirt and debris and if it’s set too low, it can be damaging to your carpet. The best way to determine what height is ideal for your carpet is to raise it to the highest setting and lower it until it feels like the vacuum cleaner is trying to pull itself forward.

Treat Carpet Stains Right Away

If you treat stains right away, 99% of them can be completely removed. Doing it right away prevents stains from having a chemical reaction with the carpet. You may be surprised to know that over 80% of stains can be removed with plain tap water. The best way to deal with stains is to blot them immediately with a clean, dry, white cloth. Continue blotting until the stain is absorbed. Make sure you don’t scrub, or you can set the stain and damage your carpet. There are lots of DIY solutions, so make sure you always test the solution you’re planning on using on a hidden area to make sure it won’t discolor or damage your carpet.

Use Your Home Steam Cleaner

While an in-home steam cleaner isn’t the same as a professional one, it’s good to have on hand. Equal parts vinegar and water added to your stem cleaner can be used refresh your carpet between cleanings. You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. The water vinegar ratio should be higher for high traffic areas. It’s important to make sure your carpets dry completely after you’ve steam cleaned them. If carpets are left wet, they become a potential breeding ground for mold to grow and they’ll also be more susceptible to dirt buildup.

Vacuum More Often with Pets

If you have pets running around your house, you’ll need to vacuum more often to pick up all the hair and dander they leave behind. You will also need to use specially formulated cleaners for pet stains and odors. Always clean pet messes up immediately and then follow stain removal tips. Small handheld extractors are great for pet cleanups but aren’t enough for deep cleaning.
