Air duct cleaning isn’t at the top of most homeowner’s to do list. Basically out of sight, out of mind. However dirty air ducts can lead to bad respiratory problems and spew allergens that you and your family will continuously suffer with from inside your home. That is why the National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends you should have you air ducts cleaned every three to five years. Those with pets, and lots of children should clean their air ducts closer to that three year mark. However there are other signs you may want to watch for. Steam Green Carpet Cleaning will discuss some of these signs so you know if you need your air ducts cleaned.

How to Get Rid of Mold in Air Ducts

The Environmental Protection Agency list some air duct problems that you should have cleaned once they are discovered in your home. They are also a clear sign that it is time to have your air ducts cleaned. If you suspect or have seen mold or mildew inside your air ducts, they need to be cleaned and treated quickly. Mold and mildew releases spores that can cause breathing problems and other serious health risks, especially in the elderly and in the young. When you turn your central air conditioner or heater on, you unknowingly push the mold or mildew spores out of you air ducts and into your entire house. Never take too long to have your air ducts cleaned once you discover your air ducts contain mold and mildew.

Pests in HVAC Ductwork; Mice, Rodents, Roaches, Bugs Etc.

Pests, like rodents and cockroaches, often use air ducts and home ventilation to gain access and travel throughout your home. Mice, rats, and cockroaches leave behind deadly diseases. Rodents carry up to eleven different deadly diseases and many are spread through their feces. Cockroaches can leave behind harmful bacteria, viruses, and disease wherever they go. Many of those health risks are spread just through direct contact with an objects or surfaces where cockroaches passed. If your home was recently or is currently under a pest invasion, call an exterminator and then have your air ducts cleaned to prevent any lingering disease or viruses from affecting you and your family.

Dust, Debris, Pet Dander & Contaminants in Air Ducts

When you turn your A/C unit on and a dust cloud blows out of the air duct, this is a big hint that there is dust and debris inside your air duct. Here are some gross facts about what the dust contains inside your air duct. Many have heard that most of the dust inside your home is human skin. It also can contain pet dander. If you have a cat in the house, microorganisms from cat litter is probably present, and so is outdoor pollen and dust mites. When your air ducts become filled with dust, your A/C unit will blow it back out into your home for you and your family to breath in. It helps to prevent much of the dust from reentering your home if you keep your air filters regularly changed out and cleaned.

The upholstery covering your furniture takes quite a bit of abuse. Over constant use, the upholstery can become faded, stained, dingy and dull. The more popular furnishings for your family can quickly be riddled with blemishes such as; ink stains, food or beverage stains, children’s creative craft-affiliated stain, and anything in between. Fortunately there are some home remedies and commercial products that can help you spot clean the upholstery in between the professional cleaning.

Professional Steam Carpet Cleaning

That being said, we at Steam Green Carpet Cleaning would like to relate the benefits of utilizing the services of a professional to perform a deep cleaning on your upholstered furnishings.
1. Effective Deep Clean. As previously mentioned, upholstery is easily besmirched with a wide range of possibilities. The more you use it the more wear and tear you can expect. With a deep cleaning service conducted by a professional, the deeply rooted stains, dirt, germs, bacteria, allergens and any other containment are pulled out of the fabric. Steam Green Carpet Cleaning uses high technologically engineered pieces of equipment and premium quality detergents that is only available to licensed professionals. Our cleaning is tough on filth, odors and stains, but still gentle enough to not damage or compromise the upholstery. On the open market, there are manufacturers that sell or rent downgraded versions, that claim to be as efficient as the professional quality, but like many things in various trades, it can clean more surface layers efficiently, but doesn’t have the power to do a meticulous cleaning in the deeper layers.
2. Improved Indoor Air Quality. As with anyone can attest to having severe allergies, or respiratory issues, improving the air quality is always a bonus. During the upholstery cleaning service, the dust, dust mites, pollen, pet hair or fur and other related allergens are removed from the upholstery. Once removed, these particles are not being agitated and cycled through the air before resettling, improving the indoor air quality you breathe and the overall cleanliness of your home.
3. Odor Removal. During the upholstery cleaning service, the deep rooted dirt, grit, and stains are extracted from the upholstery and inadvertently the present odors are also lifted. Even if upholstery hasn’t been spotted with food, beverages or pets, natural body oils can still funk up the upholstery, mucking it up with unpleasant odors. Removing the pungent odors will leave your upholstered furnishings fresh.
4. Aesthetics. When getting professional upholstery cleaning, the vibrancy and beauty is returned to the fabric. Not only are the stains removed, but the buildup of daily assailants are also cleared away, leaving behind freshly cleaned upholstery, to add to the detailed cleaned and spot free room. For as long as it can possibly last in a busy home at least.
5. Longevity. As with anything we invest in our homes and daily lives, a certain level of maintenance is needed to keep it from early retirement. A professionally upholstery cleaning is generally only recommended once a year, or more if needed by experts. Keeping up with your own daily maintenance, along with a professional touch, can not only enhance the freshness and cleanliness, but it can promote an extended life span.

Area rugs are often used to offset a hardwood or tiled floor. They are meant to contain the buildup of foot traffic and protect the hardwood floor as well as complete the aesthetics. But like the hardwood floors, tile and grout, or even carpets, your area rugs need their fair share of maintenance; and that goes beyond the daily vacuuming. Today, we at Steam Green Capet Cleaning would like to share some tips on performing some care for area rugs to better preserve their beauty, durability, and longevity.

Area Rug Cleaning Tips

Everyday: Just a reminder, especially on the area rugs that take a heavy abuse with foot traffic, vacuum a minimum of once a day or more so if needed to remove to dirt and debris before it seeds deep into the fibers. Allowing the dirt to do so will cause a sand paper- like action when people walk on it, making your area rugs wear and tear far too soon.
– Spot clean any stains as they happen.

Once a week: Vacuum the top side well, flips over and vacuum the back side thoroughly. Flip the area rug right side up and vacuum one last time to assure you got all the loosened debris. Do not vacuum any decorative fringe.
– If you have pets, use a stiff brush and moving with the direct of the rug fibers gently brush the pet hair/fur out of the area rug.

Once a quarter (every 3 months): If your area rugs are small and manageable, and the area codes and ordinances permit it, take your small area rug outside for a vigorous shaking and allow the fresh air and sunshine to hit it for a couple of hours, follow up with the vacuum maintenance on top underneath and on top again.

Annually: Even if you area rugs appear unstained and blemish clean, invest in a deep professional cleaning to ensure all of the contaminates, allergens, and pollutants are thoroughly removed. Your rugs will look vibrant vibrate and be clean, sanitized, and deodorized and if they carry any stubborn stains they will be removed.

Stain Removal Guide: Please note, any department store bought cleaners or homemade solutions should always be tested in an inconspicuous area. Stains should be immediately tended to, the longer they sit the harder they are to remove. Never scrub or rub a stain, but blot. Use white clothes, rags, and paper towels as dyes can easily transfer from the implement onto the area rug. Never use hot water as that can set stains in.
Alcohol, coffee, tea and soda – Mix together 1 tsp mild liquid dish soap, 1 quart of warm water, and 1/4 tsp of white vinegar in a spray bottle or bowl. Apply to the stain and allow it to set 5 minute and blot. Sponge rinse the area, but do not over saturate and blot dry.
Gum – Peel away the bulk. With a handful of ice cubes in a plastic bag place the bag on the gum until the gum has hardened. Use a dull edge (spatula or butter knife) and scrape away the remainder of the gum. Vacuum and if necessary, use a dry-solvent spot cleaner to remove any residue left behind.
Melted wax – Apply ice to the wax like in the gum treatment until it is hardened and scrap away the wax. Dampen a clean white cloth or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and blot to remove any remaining wax.

Cleaning your carpets is an ongoing effort. Most of the cleaning that takes place on our carpets will be done by you. Having your carpets professionally cleaned is important, but there are spills and stains that happen almost daily if you find yourself with pets that live inside and children at home. As you get ready to do some carpet cleaning, Steam Green Carpet Cleaning would like to share some common carpet cleaning mistakes to avoid.

Delaying Carpet Cleaning

When you see a spill happen on your carpet, it is important to clean it up right away. Waiting will allow the stain to set into the fibers of your carpet and be that much harder to get out. It may also soak into your carpet pad the longer you wait. By removing the stain while it is still wet, you have a much better chance of completely getting rid of it. Waiting until later to clean up a mess is the number one mistake homeowners make when cleaning their carpets.

Shampooing Carpets Too Often

You may be tempted to shampoo your carpet once a week to ensure it is clean. While having your carpets professionally cleaned is important, you can overdo it. When you have your carpets shampooed too often, it can cause damage to your carpet. It can damage the fibers of your carpeting, by unraveling the fibers and can cause premature matting. You also may start to notice fading or discoloration, an effect of the cleaners, when you shampoo too frequently.

Choosing the Wrong Carpet Cleaner

Choosing the right carpet cleaner is very important when cleaning up messes. You should be sure you are using cleaners that are specifically made for carpet cleaning. If you use other common cleaners like laundry detergent, you will find they are too harsh for your carpeting and will most likely damage your carpets.

Skipping the Carpet Patch Test

Most carpet cleaners will tell you to do a patch test before using the product, and this step is really important. You need to make sure your carpeting will handle the cleaner without fading or damaging your carpet. This is especially true if you are using a carpet cleaner that claims to be maximum strength. Find a spot that is somewhat hidden, and do the patch test, it may save you a headache in the end.

Misuse of Carpet Deodorizers

Carpet deodorizers are great for freshening up the smell of a room, but if you misuse them, it will cause problems. They aren’t meant to replace having your carpeting cleaned. Deodorizers come in powder form and if used too often, your vacuum won’t suck up all the powder. This will end up leaving a residue on your carpet fibers and attract dirt and stains.

We didnt have the funds to buy new carpet so we thought we would try them. They were able to get the pet smell out and they even were able to get oil paint from my 2 year old out of an upstairs bedroom carpet. Would use again.
